Downstream oil and gas is the final segment of the industry: refining crude oil and processing natural gas into finished products — fuels, petrochemicals, and consumer goods — and marketing and distributing them to end users.

## What downstream covers
The industry splits into three segments. Upstream finds and produces the hydrocarbons; midstream gathers, transports, and stores them; and downstream turns them into finished products and sells them. Refineries convert crude into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and feedstocks; gas processing plants and petrochemical facilities make products from natural gas and liquids; and marketing and retail move those products to consumers.
Downstream is the most consumer-facing part of the business and the farthest from the wellhead.

## Where mineral owners fit
As a mineral or royalty owner, you sit at the very top of the upstream segment — your minerals are the raw resource everything downstream depends on. You are not paid on downstream refining margins; your royalty is a share of the value of production at or near the wellhead, before it ever reaches a refinery. Downstream demand still matters indirectly, because it helps set the prices your royalty tracks.
Mineral and royalty buyers, including Buckhead Energy, operate in the upstream, non-operating part of the business — focused on the mineral interest itself rather than refining or retail.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is downstream oil and gas?**
The final segment of the industry — refining crude oil and processing natural gas into finished fuels, petrochemicals, and products, then marketing and distributing them to end users. It is the most consumer-facing part of the business.

**How is downstream different from upstream and midstream?**
Upstream finds and produces hydrocarbons; midstream gathers, transports, and stores them; downstream refines and processes them into finished products and sells them. Mineral owners sit at the top of upstream.

**Do mineral owners earn from downstream?**
Not directly. Royalty is a share of production value at or near the wellhead, not of downstream refining margins. Downstream demand does help set the commodity prices your royalty tracks.
