Two of America's most important oil and gas regions — one a century-old conventional province with modern horizontal redevelopment, the other a 21st-century unconventional play.
Get a Free Mineral ValuationThe Mid-Continent is centered in Oklahoma and extends into the Texas Panhandle and southern Kansas. The Bakken is in the Williston Basin of western North Dakota and northeast Montana, with extensions into Saskatchewan. The two are about 1,000 miles apart and have completely different geological and operational histories.
Mid-Continent: continuous oil production since 1905 (Glenn Pool). Modern era is horizontal redevelopment of legacy provinces (Mississippi Lime, Hunton, Granite Wash) and new horizontal stacked-pay (SCOOP/STACK Woodford and Meramec).
Bakken: commercial horizontal production began approximately 2008 with EOG Resources' Parshall field discovery. The play is purely a 21st-century horizontal phenomenon — there is no significant pre-2008 vertical production history.
Mid-Continent: diverse — Mississippi Lime, Hunton, Bartlesville, Booch, Wilcox, Caney Shale, Woodford, Meramec, Granite Wash, Springer; depths 1,000-25,000+ ft TVD; multiple plays in different counties
Bakken: three primary horizons (Upper Bakken Shale, Middle Bakken Sand, Three Forks); depths 9,000-11,000 ft TVD; uniform across the play
Mid-Continent: mix of large public independents and the largest concentration of long-life private/stripper operators in the lower 48
Bakken: large public independents (Continental Resources, Hess, Whiting, Oasis Petroleum successors, Marathon Oil, ConocoPhillips); minimal private/stripper operator base
Mid-Continent: diverse — long-tail waterflood income on Cherokee Platform; high-rate horizontal income on STACK/SCOOP; deep gas income on Granite Wash. Mineral interests often have 30+ years of production history.
Bakken: high initial production rates (1,500-3,000 BOPD per well peak), steep first-year decline (60-70%), then long-life tail. Mineral interests typically have 5-15 years of production history (since 2008-2018).
Mid-Continent mineral interests are commonly inherited 4-5 generations deep — heirship can be complex, and family chains span many decades. Bakken interests are typically much fresher — often acquired or leased within the last 15-20 years, with simpler chains of title.
