The Cypress Sandstone is a Late Mississippian-age sandstone that sits stratigraphically above the Aux Vases Sandstone across most of the Illinois Basin. The Cypress comprises multiple individual sand bodies — sometimes called Big Cypress, Little Cypress, or simply "the Cypress" on royalty statements — at depths typically between 1,200 and 2,500 feet.
The Cypress is a workhorse Illinois Basin producer with active waterflood operations on hundreds of fields. Many royalty statements show commingled Cypress + Aux Vases production where both formations contribute to wellbore output.
