What Is the Caney Shale?

The Caney Shale is a Mississippian-age organic-rich shale and limestone interval in southern Oklahoma. It is stratigraphically equivalent to the Barnett Shale of Texas and the Woodford Shale of central Oklahoma, and sits in the depth window where the Cherokee Platform overlaps the northern Arkoma Basin — primarily across Hughes, Coal, Pittsburg, Atoka, Pontotoc, Carter, and Johnston counties.

The Caney was historically considered a source rock rather than a primary completion target, but improvements in slickwater fracture stimulation and lateral steering have made the Caney commercially viable as a horizontal target. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL) has used the Caney as a field laboratory for unconventional reservoir research, with multi-well science programs in southern Oklahoma generating publicly available reservoir characterization data.

Age: Late Mississippian (~330 million years)

Depth: Approximately 5,000–10,000 feet TVD across the producing trend

Lithology: Black organic-rich shale interbedded with siliceous limestone; high silica content improves fracability

Stacked relationships: Sits above the Woodford Shale and below the Sycamore in much of the producing area; many Caney horizontals are part of multi-zone development plans
