The Pearsall Shale is a Lower Cretaceous (Aptian-age) organic-rich shale underlying portions of South Texas, sitting beneath the Eagle Ford Shale and the Austin Chalk. The Pearsall has been recognized as a hydrocarbon source rock for decades, but commercial completion as an unconventional target was challenging through the 2010s. Recent improvements in completion design and renewed exploration interest from operators including EOG Resources and Formentera Partners have produced active 2025–2026 horizontal de-risking activity.
