Editorial Standards

How Buckhead Energy researches, sources, reviews, and maintains the oil & gas content on this site — and the principles that keep it accurate and useful for mineral owners rather than hype.

Who writes and reviews this content

Our guides, encyclopedia, and data pages are produced by the Buckhead Energy team — the same land, title, acquisitions, and research professionals who buy and evaluate mineral interests every day. Content is written and reviewed collectively rather than attributed to a single byline, because it reflects the firm\'s working knowledge, not one person\'s opinion. Where a topic is legal, tax, or valuation-specific, it is checked against primary sources and by the team members who work in that area.

Where our facts and data come from

We prioritize primary, verifiable sources:

State regulators — well, permit, and production records from the Texas Railroad Commission, Oklahoma Corporation Commission, and their equivalents in every state we cover.

Public state production and well records, aggregated and normalized — we compile the states' own public data into the open county-production datasets, field pages, and operator summaries you see here.

Government energy data — the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) for production and price context.

Statutes and case law — for legal topics such as dormancy, severance, and lease clauses, we cite the actual statute or code section, and note when a rule varies by state.

Several of our datasets are permanently archived with a DOI and published under a CC BY 4.0 license so anyone can verify and reuse them — see our press & datasets page.

Accuracy, dating, and updates

Data pages carry an as-of date and are refreshed on a monthly cadence from source records.

We round figures in prose and keep exact, dated numbers in the tables, so the text never drifts from the data.

When a statute or rule is state-specific, we say so rather than generalize.

What we do not do

We do not publish specific dollar valuations or per-acre price figures, because real value depends on your specific wells, decimal, lease, and play — see why there is no reliable average price.

We do not give legal, tax, or financial advice. Our content is educational; we point owners to qualified attorneys and CPAs for decisions specific to their situation.

We do not use high-pressure tactics, invented statistics, or fabricated authorship.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it and note it. See our corrections policy for how to report an error and how we handle it.
