The Black Warrior Basin is a Paleozoic foreland basin under western Alabama and northeastern Mississippi, formed as the Appalachian and Ouachita mountain belts pushed sediment northwest during the late Paleozoic. It sits between the Appalachian fold-and-thrust belt on the southeast, the Ouachita structural belt on the southwest, and the Nashville Dome to the north; to the west it disappears beneath the Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments of the Mississippi Embayment and Gulf Coastal Plain. Basin fill runs from Cambrian through Pennsylvanian age. Published footprints range from roughly 23,000 to 35,000 square miles depending on where the western edge is drawn.
In energy terms it is a gas basin, and specifically one of the earliest and most mature coalbed-methane (CBM) provinces in the United States. Methane adsorbed in Pennsylvanian-age Pottsville coal seams was first drained for mine safety, then produced commercially from the late 1970s and 1980s around the Brookwood and Oak Grove mining districts of Tuscaloosa and Jefferson counties. By 2002 the province was producing more than 110 billion cubic feet a year from 3,357 wells, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Conventional oil and gas from Paleozoic sandstones and carbonates continues west of the coal fields into Mississippi, where the basin's northeastern counties have produced gas since the 1970s.
For a mineral or royalty owner the practical point is that this is not a horizontal shale play. Wells are shallow and numerous, gas volumes per well are small, decline has been under way for two decades, and the relationship among coal, gas, surface and mineral estates matters more than in most basins. The U.S. Geological Survey organizes the province into two total petroleum systems: the Pottsville Coal system (the commercial CBM engine) and the Chattanooga Shale / Floyd Shale–Paleozoic system that sources the conventional accumulations.

USGS's 2002 assessment (Fact Sheet 038-03) put mean undiscovered, technically recoverable resources for the province at 8.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, 5.9 million barrels of oil and 7.6 million barrels of natural-gas liquids, with roughly 7 Tcf of the gas in the coalbed-methane assessment unit (DDS-69-I, ch. 4). These are geology-based estimates of what remains to be found — not reserves, production forecasts or a statement about any tract.

Operators of record in the Alabama coal fields today are a small group: Warrior Met Coal Gas (the mine-affiliated operator, and the only one still filing permits at scale — 35 in the last 24 months), Urban Oil & Gas Group, PGP Operating, Black Warrior Methane, Diversified Production and, in the conventional counties, Land and Natural Resource Development and Hughes Eastern. On the Mississippi side the names are Pruet Production, Gibraltar Energy, Dallas Production, Scorpion Oil & Gas and Moon Hines Tigrett. Legacy names on old leases — Energen, Taurus Exploration, Gurnee Gas, Jim Walter Resources, River Gas — have changed hands more than once; the current operator on your check stub is the one that matters.

Because the gas is produced from coal seams, whether it belongs to the coal owner, the gas owner or both depends on how those estates were severed in your chain of title, and the answer has been litigated in Alabama. Treat it as a title question: the deeds and reservations control, and a qualified oil and gas attorney can confirm what yours convey. Title review before closing is where that gets settled.
A coalbed-methane well produces water first and gas later. Reservoir pressure has to fall before methane desorbs, so water handling and disposal costs shape whether an old well stays on line — and shape the royalty checks that reach you.
Production peaked around 2002 and most fields have declined since. The basin historically held more than 5,000 CBM wells; how many are producing today, and at what rate, is a question for current regulator records and the operator's filings, not the historical totals. In the Brookwood and Oak Grove districts, gas wells share the ground with active longwall mines. Methane-control wells, mine-safety setbacks, subsidence and surface access all affect where new wells can go and how long old ones run. Mine maps and coal-seam correlations are often worth more than regional mapping when evaluating a specific tract.
Well histories, pressure and dewatering performance, gathering-system maps and plugged-well records tell you more about a Black Warrior interest than any basin-scale map. Buckhead evaluates interests using production data, geological analysis, and current market conditions.
Much of the basin's acreage passed down through families before anyone drilled a gas well on it, so interests are often small, fractional and spread across several relatives. That is normal here, and it does not stop an evaluation. A recent royalty statement, division order, or deed helps when you have them.
