The county sits at the heart of the Barnett Shale, which was the first major shale formation in the U.S. to be commercially developed using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.

The Barnett Shale has produced over 20 trillion cubic feet of natural gas since development began in earnest in the early 2000s. While production has declined from its peak in 2011-2012, the formation remains an important source of domestic natural gas.
