The Barnett Shale has produced over 20 trillion cubic feet of natural gas since development began in earnest in the early 2000s. While production has declined from its peak in 2011-2012, the formation remains an important source of domestic natural gas.

Buckhead Energy has been purchasing mineral rights in the Barnett Shale since 2007.
