Morgan County sits along the South Platte River in northeastern Colorado, with Fort Morgan as its county seat and Brush, Wiggins, Log Lane Village and Hillrose as its other towns. First production of record in Morgan County dates to 1953, early in the development of the D and J sands across northeastern Colorado. The Adena field became the county's largest, with close to 200 wells that have produced, alongside fields such as Sand River, Vallery, Zorichak, Bijou and Boxer. Countywide, more than 1,200 wells were spudded in the 1950s alone, and nearly half of all wells in the county were wildcats. As the shallow sandstone fields declined, many wells were plugged, and several fields in the county are now used for underground natural gas storage. Only about 17 wells have been drilled in the county since 2010.
