On the state oil and gas regulator's own website. This page lists 117 free official portals in 24 states; in 17 of them the free portals cover wells, production, permits, and orders or hearings. Some states keep production with another agency: Oklahoma's Corporation Commission names the Oklahoma Tax Commission as the official production recordkeeper.
Most portals search by API well number, operator, lease or well name, field, or county (parish in Louisiana). Your check stub or division order usually names the operator and the property, which is enough to start. Some show a disclaimer or terms screen before the search page (California's WellSTAR, for example).
Some are. North Dakota charges a subscription for well files, scout tickets and well-level production, so those are not listed here. This page lists only free tools that the regulator or state geological survey publishes or links from its own site; a few open a map app that the agency runs on ArcGIS, as each portal's note says. Paid and login-only tools are left out.
A record type is marked not found when no free official online portal for it was found in the Nov 2, 2026 check. It does not mean the state keeps no such record; many regulators supply orders or older files on request.
